Why is generosity important in leadership?

Leadership in organisations often takes such big ideas and complicated strategy that it’s easy to overlook some of the simplest yet more crucial qualities.

It’s true that the pressure on leaders often means they need to focus more on performance than making friends, but there’s always room for some of the most fundamental requirements of working effectively with people.

Why is generosity an important quality?

Generosity is important simply because it’s not mandatory.

As people, we appreciate it when others are generous because generosity is voluntary. If somebody has to give us something, then they’re not strictly being generous by obliging.

But if someone chooses to be generous—whether that’s with money, compliments, or simply their time—they’re telling us that they care and that they want to help others however they can.

Not only that, but generosity is shown to be directly beneficial to our health and to others. From reduced stress to an improved sense of purpose, to even supposedly increasing a person’s lifespan, being generous is a highly important quality.

Why is generosity important in leadership, in the workplace?

When you take the objective benefits of generosity and transpose them to the workplace, it’s not hard to see why those qualities might benefit you and your colleagues.

Being generous with time, for instance, is a greatly beneficial quality in the workplace. It allows you to slow down and really listen to your colleagues, understanding tasks and problems on a deeper level.

This means a stronger grasp on the importance of one’s work, better bonds of trust and collaboration with others, and a host of other benefits that, really, are all self-created.

The amazing thing about generosity is that it’s a choice, and such a simple choice to make for such incredible benefits.

What is generosity in leadership?

On the surface, it can seem difficult to marry leadership with generosity. Leadership can ask much of the people working under a company leader, so how can a person up top demand hard work while also being a generous person?

But it’s not impossible. The key is understanding that there is a constant give-and-take relationship, one that allows leaders to offer the best parts of themselves in exchange for trust, dedication, and loyalty from their staff.

Not only does it directly benefit staff when leaders are generous with their time and their trust, but it also sets a positive example.

Just like parents being role models for their children, good leaders are always setting an example for staff, showing them how to manage authority, deal with problems, and negotiate with others with an open hand.
