  • Patience and empathy: being patient with staff can make all the difference when they need just a little more time to do their best work or to navigate a difficult situation. Likewise, empathy opens leaders up to the real struggles, fears, and motivations of their people.
  • Honesty: being an honest person is essential if you demand honesty from the people you work with. Being able to put hands up and admit when you’re at fault and letting others be right—these are the things that cultivate mutual respect.
  • Development: as a manager or business leader, you’re in a unique position to observe people and notice their traits. The places where they lack and excel might not be as clear to themselves as they are to you. Bringing this perspective to staff and helping them structure it into goals is valuable to their development and, ultimately, the business.

All of these skills and more are part of modelling the kind of collaborative and respectful work presence that you’d like to see in all of your colleagues. Be the change you want to see in the world, as the saying goes.
